It’s like we’re given a little paper bag when we’re born. Inside the bag are tokens that represent the number of summers we get to experience in our life, and everyone has a different number of them in their bag.
In June, we reach in our bag and pull out a summer to enjoy, with no guarantee there is another token left in the bag for next year.
How many summers do we get in our life, and how many are left?
If you knew you only had a few summers left, how would you spend them?
Zipper in the back bro
It’s something I wanted to try. Something I was hopeful would become a piece of the adventure puzzle I’m building in my life.
The first sign I was out of my element was walking out of the changing tent and onto the white sand.
I had the warm Southern California sun on my face, the waves were rolling up to my feet, and then, the awkward look from my surfing instructor letting me know I had put my wetsuit on backwards, “zipper in the back bro”.
Surfing was on my “do-it” list.
I wanted to take lessons from a pro and decided it was time to cross it off the list. With a short text to my adventure buddy Mark, we jumped on a plane and did it.
What’s on your “do-it” list?
Do you have a “do-it” list? Is it written out, or just tucked into a corner of your brain for safe keeping? You know, it’s the list of things we want to see, touch and feel before it’s too late.
Maybe it’s a trip to Italy, sipping a glass of wine while watching the sunset on Lake Como. Maybe it’s walking across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco as the fog rolls in.
Big or small is irrelevant, having a written list is all that matters.
Living with intention
In 1966 the movie The Endless Summer documented two young surfers as they attempt to chase summer around the globe in order to surf in the perfect weather 365 days a year.
Unfortunately, our summers are not endless, but they should be filled with just as much adventure, excitement and possibilities.
Do-it List Action Steps
- Get a piece of paper and write down five things you want to see, touch or feel before you die. You can add more, just make sure you have your top five clearly written out at the top of the page.
- Pick one item from your list and circle it. Now write down three things you can do today to make this happen. In my surf example, I found a friend who wanted to join me. I picked a date that worked. I booked the flight. Within 48 hours of picking it from my list, I was committed. Pull the trigger, you just have to do it.
- Rinse and repeat, but don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to do the whole list at once. Pick one item and get started, and then keep working from and adding to your list as you check things off.
It’s not going to be perfect, and that’s OK. I found out that I don’t like to surf as much as I thought and truthfully, I’m not that good at it.
But I did it. I crossed it off my list and I’m adding more adventures and ideas as I go. The reward is in the doing of it, not in the thinking of it.
Tomorrow is June 1st.
Let’s reach inside, pull out another summer and be grateful we had at least one more left inside our bag.
